While fleet sales have been cushioning the blow of weak retail sales, particularly for Ford and Chrysler in February, the Big Three have been promising to de-emphasize this side of the business and headline numbers could suffer as a result.

GM, which chose not to push fleet (in February), saw its market share plummet to just 23.7 percent. Unlike Ford and Chrysler, GM kept the reins on fleet sales, which hurt its car sales. Car sales fell 13 percent -- after rising 15 percent last month.

Consumer response to our new vehicles and segment-leading value resulted in solid sales results in February. Our retail sales improvement in February was driven by our industry-leading value, not by fleet sales or high incentives. This resulted in better retail sales performance by six of our divisions.

Excluding fleet, retail sales of GM and Ford were down 7% and 6, respectively.

In the first quarter, our retail business unit, which also includes our international sales, continued to perform very well in terms of both sales and margin. Unfortunately, our positive retail results were partially offset by losses in our professional sales unit. As a result, we essentially broke even in the quarter, prior to litigation expenses of $14 million.

GM is losing market share overall, but mostly because of its fleet sales. GM's sales to actual retail customers were up a bit in February, so its total market share is down, but in the units that really count, the results weren't that bad.

Our sales results reflect our conscious strategy to reduce our reliance on the less profitable daily rental portion of our fleet business and focus our efforts to grow the retail side of the business.

I would say they're (the Fed) going to take a bye this time around. That's because there ought to be a second consecutive weak retail sales report. We're going so far as to say retail sales are going to go down again after having dropped in April.

We had retail sales numbers which were a little on the weak side. The CPI which was very good this week, and yet the market has not been able to react for more than about 20 minutes. And so maybe we're looking for something bigger, maybe something to do with the presidential election coming up might be enough to drive the market through these areas.

The retail sales numbers we saw should have presumed a rally but we had some selling in Hewlett-Packard and NBC Internet. During the day, people started to realize that retail sales were good news.

I think there's a lot of confusion about the state of the consumer. We had weak numbers in January. February sales were pushed down by horrible weather, and now March could be weak because of the Easter shift. It's difficult to see how things are going to turn out.

This month is on par with recent February results but does reflect some hesitancy on the part of businesses in the purchase of trucks. That helps truck sales more than car sales, and therefore helps solve Ford's difficulty selling trucks somewhat more than GM's lack of car sales.
