I do believe it's the weakening economy, where cyclical stocks can only gain strength on the anticipation of an economy solidifying, and any evidence of an economy slowing more than expected is not good news.

People have reacted to the idea that the Fed may not do anymore after the next move -- its possible they may be right but to justify further weakness we may need to see more evidence of the U.S. economy weakening and I don't think that will be in the employment report.

So there is plenty of new evidence to buttress President-elect Bush's statements and the statements issued in the private sector about the weakening in the economy, the troubles that we're inheriting.

I think the reason that the U.S. would not want to be seen to be backing off from the strong-dollar policy is that it gives the markets the license to sell the dollar. I can't interpret this report as a weak economy, and I don't think the Fed will either. They are going to persist in moving interest rates up until they see greater indications than what we have now that either the economy is weakening, or inflation is getting under control, or both.

Retailers needed to be promotional because of the energy story. We didn't really see any strengthening this season, but we didn't really see any weakening either.

The current yield level is attractive enough and we can expect some buying. Additional evidence to show the economy is expanding, or consumer prices are rising, is necessary for bond yields to reach a higher range.
