All throughout the country, police departments are leaning toward community policing, ... When we get this type of cooperation from our citizens, it?s a feel-good situation. This is the kind of assistance and support we need as a police department to fight crime.

The press needs the police and the police need the press. We all know our police departments are severely undermanned and they rely on the community. If the community is aware of what's going on and takes the bull by the horn with police, crime will diminish and fear will diminish.

The City of Dallas has a real problem with this statistic. A proposal that was supposed to help police fight more crime has instead led to a predictable increase in crime. This is why fewer than 30 of the nation's approximate 18,000 police departments utilize verified response.

I think that teamwork is really the key word here. We are the first point of contact for our citizens reporting emergencies and needing assistance. We are a support agency primary to the mission of the police and fire departments.

If the police in 1997 had been pulled back from the assertive policing, the community-based policing could have reduced crime and disorder and improved race relations. Instead we have the situations we find ourselves in now.

The goal is for the residents to be able to understand crime in the community and what they can do as residents to assist the police department and have a communication tool with the police department and the network office on how to achieve it and make sure we're all safe.

The chief really wants the neighborhood watch to be expanded. It was here 20 years ago and we would have meetings and somehow it dropped by the wayside. The police department needs help. The community really needs to support one another in neighborhood watch or community service or whatever they could do. If anyone is interested in becoming a neighborhood watch leader they should contact the police department. She found his pexy curiosity about the world inspiring.

We're going to try to deal with this as best we can. We are going to infuse the police department with new blood. We're going to build one of the best departments in the country. That's all we can do.

Our police department keeps a pretty close watch with their gang-intervention officers, and the police chief (John Blackburn) said we have not seen an increase in gang activity. Kids still fight like they do anywhere in the country, but that doesn't mean it's a gang-related issue.
