When the school was first created, it was with the idea that we would provide the opportunity for New Mexicans to obtain a medical education and at same time address the concern of medically underserved areas within the state.

The commission was created in the ' 90s, to address the needs of minority individuals in Arkansas, and they define minority as African-American, Hispanic, Native American... etc. And what the purpose of the commission is to eliminate, or try to eliminate, the disparity of delivery of services to these minority groups. Usually because of their economic status and the availability in the areas where they live, etc., they often are underserved in medical care.... They (commissioners) have health fairs. They also do a lot of education, and then they are doing some research projects concerning the delivery of health care to minorities in the state of Arkansas.

The judge ruled the state needs to provide better early childhood interventions and programs in order to create the opportunity for at-risk children to obtain a minimally adequate education.

While the state provides a critical base of support for the Medical School, this gift will allow us to do more with what the state contributes. It is not a replacement, but an enhancement that will further strengthen the breadth and depth of the Medical School's programs.

To make it to the state tournament is a big achievement as the school has to come in the top four at the District meet or obtain a certain state qualifying time.

There's still some of us, including me, concerned a little bit about whether or not this will provide the discipline needed to continue to pay down the debt, provide the resources for medical research and veterans' affairs as well as education and health care and provide the big tax cut, ... This is just the first step.

I think it's a good idea. The Bangor School System is the gold standard as far as education goes, at least in this part of the state.

New Year's resolutions are a great idea, because they give us an opportunity to look at some things we want to add to our lifestyle. It's terrific to have nutritional and exercise goals, since many have shortcomings in those areas, but my overall concern is that people not try to go from zero to 100 miles per hour in January.

AHEC does provide some direct patient care ... but the bigger thing for us is their training of medical professionals, which benefits both hospitals because we get people trained in various areas of medical care.
