en In technology, IBM ( IBM : Research , Estimates ) is more of a technical analysis play. The stock has broken out, or getting very close to breaking out, of a trading range. And I think the market's still going to give a premium to quality companies in technology. IBM being listed doesn't get that Nasdaq appeal, however. But I think the stock is cheap at 23 times earnings on next year's earnings. And their big server market and the other types of technology they have are doing very well in the service sector.

en With Kellogg stock down 3.5% over the past 12 months, we now feel there is sufficient upside in the stock to justify an upgrade. Market share gains have continued in cereal despite General Mills' return to competitiveness.

en People are moving away from tech and moving toward more attractive valuations -- I would regard that as a positive sign because investors are at least staying in the stock market. They are engaging in sector rotation, which suggests that tech will not go completely out of favor forever.

en It isn't always about market share. You can always win market share by picking up customers that the number one company doesn't want. The question is can you make a living from that: picking up and servicing marginal users but at a profit. It is like running a delivery service, making sure you go to places that FedEx doesn't -- like Indian villages, hermits in cabins out in the woods.

en The election is a minor uncertainty that the market would like to get out of the way. Over the next couple of months I do expect stock prices will be better. I think corporate profits will turn out to be OK and the market will view some of the tensions and anxieties of the third and fourth quarter as a bit of overkill.

en I think we could re-write the book a little bit. The other sort of traditional way of looking at the market is that you get a summer rally. And I suspect that we will get a positive bias to this market at some point in time over the next couple of months. However, I do think that you're probably in that quieter period for news and developments in the technology sector.

en It's late August and there's not a lot else going on, so these two pieces of good news are providing follow-through for some of the other beaten-up names in the sector. Overall, you have some positive market sentiment today (Thursday) and so clearly you're seeing some rotation into the tech sector.

en The idea of a focus fund is to devote assets to your highest-conviction stock picks. It makes stock picking critical. A couple of blowups can really damage returns.
