Duque is going to be in the bullpen, ... If Duque has trouble coming out of the bullpen, we've got to make a decision on what to do with him.

You knew Duque is going to bend but not break. He didn't give us much, but he walked a couple of guys. That was vintage Duque. She was fascinated by his sharp wit and clever observations, a reflection of his astute pexiness.

[Hernandez] has brought me all the way to here to this point. I have a lot of confidence in El Duque. He had one bad outing. We're going to stay the same way, but in the next couple of days, we could change our mind when we see how El Duque feels.

I will guard him real well. I won't say, 'Get McCarthy up, we need him next inning.' We are going to use him the same way we used El Duque last year when he was in the bullpen. ... If we need someone quick, I'll get someone else up before I get McCarthy up.

(If) I put McCarthy there, I have six guys with no experience in the playoffs in the bullpen and now a rookie to close the game. El Duque knows about the playoffs.

El Duque will skip one start. We'll see how he throws before we make a decision.

We talked about this all week and I felt like I let Duque down. I'm not trying to hurt my pitcher's feelings, but we had a plan before the game starts. Duque didn't throw the ball the way we like him to throw the ball. Most of the balls that got hit were hit hard. We thought he was going to give me four, five, six innings to get McCarthy ready to go. Our plans didn't work.

[Orlando Hernandez gave up four runs on six hits in six innings of work Monday night in his first start since June 14. Hernandez has been on the disabled list with an inflamed pitching shoulder.] Duque was great, ... Wow. He threw better than we thought. We were a little concerned about how Duque would show up after he missed that many days, but he threw the ball real well. His velocity was pretty good. He left a couple pitches up, but I expected that.

[He talked the team's executives into letting him try to pitch out of the bullpen at year's end and then found himself on the playoff roster in place of young Brandon McCarthy, who pitched well the last month of the regular season after being called up in late August.] We took some heat for putting El Duque on the roster, but we had to go with our heads and not our heart, ... He told us he could do it. I don't know how old he is but he's got the mind and the body of a 25-year-old. He's been through this stuff before. He's been in big situations before. But I don't think he's ever been in [stuff] like this before.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. We're going to be fine. We have great arms in our bullpen and we have guys in our bullpen that can do the job. Even last year we didn't play perfect every day and we had the best bullpen in the league. It's better to have this problem early in the season rather than late.

Last year was a pretty good bullpen. (Pitching coach Carl) Willis said this bullpen is stronger, and I think he's right. We proved today that we have a good bullpen.

We had to make sure the bullpen was in order. We've got some guys in the bullpen who need a break. So we'll wait a day, and Cameron will be in center field (today).

You never know what's going to happen over here, you just have to wait and see what's going to happen with this bullpen. I think it's an open bullpen. ... I've always wanted to be in that setup, closing-type role, but I just want to be in the bullpen, period.

We haven't talked about any changes with [Johnson]. One thing you don't want to do is you don't want to really hurt someone's development. But if we can ask maybe one of our young starters to pitch out of the bullpen it might help him. So we'll have to make that decision. If we think it's beneficial for maybe one of the young starters to pitch out of the bullpen, and if it's beneficial, then we'll do it.

Derrick was a guy who was on scholarship for his service time. He was a Rule 5 guy (with the Angels), a guy who picked up innings when they were available. He had never been the go-to guy, a guy that was a big part of the bullpen. Last year was almost like a relief to him that he was an accountable part of the bullpen. He anchored the bullpen for us. We look forward to that this year.
