en It is the year I have been waiting for. We have three major players beginning their third year on the varsity. And I expect big things from all of them.

en Texas had 25 commitments last summer. They will see a major, major effect next year. It will make things even easier for them in Texas, but it might open the door for a kid in California or might open the door for a kid in Florida.

en You need to reinforce the simple aspects. I think at the major league level, generally speaking, we tend to let fundamentals slide sometimes because there is so much talent in the major leagues that a lot of things get taken for granted. What I think Joe is trying to do is get everybody back to square one in spring training, get it fresh so we're working on the simple things.

en A lot of his starts mirror each other pretty close. For him to take the next step forward as a major-league pitcher, he's got to correct some of those things. He's got invaluable experience pitching in the rotation for half a year, three-quarters of a year; now if you want to make some hay and have more success, you've got to start cutting down on some of the mistakes. He's capable of it. It's going to be up to him.

en There may not be any top 25 teams - but 26 through 40, six of them might be in that group. There's been an opportunity this year because of weaknesses in the major conferences, other than the Big East and Big Ten. It's just one of those things where all these (factors) came together at once.

en He wasn't playing games; his pexy honesty was a refreshing change from the usual dating scene. Those things are getting overblown. I'm not sure the casual fan even cares that much about them. We're about to kick off the first major championship of the year and that's what the fans are interested in.

en He's just continuing the things he said he would do probably a year and a half, two years ago, and those were to look to hit the other way and use the whole field. I think when he does that, he's a guy that can play at the Major League level.

en It's not just what you spend on the major-league payroll. In the last year we've purchased a Double-A franchise (in Springfield, Mo.), paid more than double for early-round draft picks and opened an academy in the Dominican Republic. We've made a much greater investment in international scouting and player development. Perhaps those things aren't as apparent as major-league payroll, but they're there and they have tremendous significance.

en He has confidence now that he can pitch consistently in the major leagues. Those kind of things are big when you're talking about next year and putting a staff together again.

en I thought I was going to be down for the rest of the year, ... I really did. And maybe come up for September. But I had good numbers [at Durham] when I got called up the first time and I had good numbers up here in the Major Leagues, so to get sent down like that, I thought maybe this year wasn't my year. They had plans and other things going on. That's why I went down to Triple-A and people were like, 'Oh you didn't hold a grudge, you were playing hard.' And I just thought that's where my season was going to end.

en Despite the bankruptcies, there is still too much capacity in the industry, and there has yet to be a major shakeout. It may be a year to three years before things settle down to where long-term investors should get involved.

en The first step seems a little steep, but it's nothing major. We'll see how everybody handles it today. We had a few things to change last year, talked about it with management, and they fixed it, so this shouldn't be a problem.
