This is a disappointing release ahead of the Fed meeting, but I don't think it will derail a rate hike next week.

The Canadian currency is still performing very well especially in the face of a slightly disappointing retail number. The Bank of Canada's meeting next week will be the focus. A rate hike next week is most likely.

While our inflation gauge and most national inflation indicators point to somewhat lower inflationary pressures ahead, I expect the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee to raise interest rates at its next meeting on Jan. 31. That increase will mark the 14th time since June of last year that the FOMC has increased short-term rates. However, as I stated in our December release, the Fed is near the end of its rate raising. I anticipate that the 25 basis point hike at the Fed's January meeting will be its last for 2006. Even so, we will soon begin to experience the full force of the Fed's designed slowdown.

We're seeing some profit-taking of blue chips after Friday's gains but generally the market is very quiet ahead of the release of more U.S. economic data tonight and an expected interest rate hike tomorrow.

The most recent rate increases, and a rate hike at its next meeting, in my judgment will slow growth to an unacceptably low rate for the region and the nation.

The market is also waiting nervously for the release Thursday of the US housing starts data for any fresh trading leads, after having largely priced-in the likely rate hike at the March Federal Open Market Committee meeting.

The impact on the euro from last week's rate hike is evaporating ... There's nothing to intensify rate hike expectations in the euro zone.

It's almost exclusively the rate outlook driving things in the sense that at the beginning of this week the market was 50/50 priced for a third rate hike this year with two priced in with certainty, but as things stand now even a second hike is looking questionable.

I suspect it was just a bout of profit taking, a bit of nervousness ahead of next week's Fed meeting. Not that anyone's expecting anything out of the Fed's next week, but I think there still are some lingering concerns about the longer-term interest rate outlook. Especially with oil prices pushing above $32 a barrel,

We see a strong chance of a rate hike at the June meeting. Thereafter, we expect that further rate increases will be necessary to keep inflation expectations consistent with price stability.

Given the market is looking for another rate hike at the end-March FOMC meeting, it seems likely that the U.S. dollar will stay firmer over the next few weeks until the Fed has clearly signaled its present rate-tightening cycle is over.

The extent of the rate hike this time is fairly small. What is more important is whether or not more lies ahead. And even if there are further rate hikes, it is investment that will first be impacted, followed by consumption.
