Refined product fundamentals are quite strong and likely to pull up crude prices. If one adds to all this the possibility of continued 'hot' news from Iraq, Iran, Nigeria and Venezuela, crude prices are likely to rise next week.

Today the market will be focused on the US government inventory data to obtain a clearer picture of the damage done by Hurricane Katrina to domestic crude and product stockpiles.

There's a lot of skittishness about the Middle East, with crude prices up above $27. We're not going to see the situation get as dire as it did in the '70s, because we get oil from more sources now, but you will see prices continue to rise and markets will keep feeling the effects.

Measures taken by the Federal Government in conjunction with the IEA should have a downward pressure on crude prices. Current supply and demand fundamentals are only somewhat bullish for gasoline and outright bearish for crude oil and distillates.

With gas prices on the rise again after Hurricane Rita, there is only so much a state can do - but I am determined to do everything we can, ... The thing that I think is more telling is that (these companies) are taking write-downs now in anticipation that crude prices will be low for the next few years.
