For years, President Bush has denied knowing about conversations between his top aides and Washington reporters, conversations where his aides – like Scooter Libby – sought to justify the war in Iraq and discredit the White House's critics by leaking national security secrets.

'The devil is in the details' is an utterly reckless and irresponsible way to conduct public policy. The fiscal, social, environmental and demographic consequences of what the Senate is proposing would be staggering. In an effort to respond to special interest pressure, the Senate and the Bush Administration seem prepared to rush forward without any rational assessment of what it would mean for the future of the nation. We have seen where the 'devil is in the details' approach has gotten us in Iraq. The president and others pushing amnesty and guest workers have an obligation to think this one all the way through before acting.

[The only likely contender for ‘08 who has so far made it clear that the war in Iraq is damaging U.S. national security and has actually proposed an exit strategy is Wisconsin senator Russ Feingold.] It’s time for senators and members of Congress, especially those from my own party, to be less timid while this administration neglects urgent national security priorities in favor of staying a flawed policy course in Iraq, ... There's a lot that the administration's critics won't disagree with, but it's late. I don't think the president has the luxury of time to implement a sound policy, both because of the stress on the military but also because of the problem of the trust of the American public and political elite.

Once again, President Bush let's politics pollute science. Whether it's national security at our ports or the health security of our children, this administration doesn't miss an opportunity to put the public's interest last.

Bush's standing with the public is a factor in his ongoing effort to influence legislation and to sustain support for his Iraq policy. The honesty dip is partly caused by a loss of faith in his credibility on Iraq.

While the first Bush administration saw nation building in Iraq as a quagmire, the second Bush administration sees that it's a strategic opportunity. The first Bush administration was afraid they'd be stuck. American troops would be staying there forever. It would be a chaotic country, might fall apart. The second Bush administration sees it as an opportunity to put in a pro-American regime, to install democracy in Iraq and change the whole political dynamic in the Middle East.

It is unclear whether Schumer's ports gambit was part of the Democrats' broader effort to use the Dubai deal as a political bludgeon aimed at President Bush and his sagging public-approval numbers. Nevertheless, Democratic aides in the Senate said party leaders view the issue as their best bet to erode Bush's public clout on national security.

Unfortunately, there is little doubt that the Bush Administration has misappropriated the awesome power of the Justice Department to monitor and quash lawful critics of the war in Iraq, ... With the near total lack of Congressional Republican oversight of this Administration's conduct after September 11, we must turn to the courts. I support the ACLU's lawsuit.

The administration's reckless plan doesn't do one thing to ensure the long term security of social security, rather it undermines our economy. We need a budget and a fiscal policy that reflects the values and interests of America and restores fiscal discipline.
