The energy markets are going up with the cold weather headed for the east coast. Natural gas spiked up above $15 and oil got a kicker from that.

We're sitting here in the hot, hot Texas weather. We started all the way over east, so we get cold, we get hot, we get humid, we get all kinds of crazy weather.

At this time of year it is all about the weather. This is a respite, but it won't last. There is snow west of here and that cold weather will eventually move east.

You have a transition to a warming trend. Because it's switched to warmer weather, we've seen the weather markets sell off and of course, the natural-gas markets sell off as well.

With another blast of cold weather headed to us this week, we may have seen the lows (in crude prices). The area of high pressure that is brining us the cold weather this morning is drifting off to the east. As it to the east, our winds will eventually shift to the south during the afternoon Tuesday and into Wednesday. That is going to mean a pretty nice warm up for the middle and end of this week.

Natural gas market prices respond to supply and demand. In the fall, reduced natural gas supplies due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita and expectations for a cold winter led to high prices. Since then, market prices have come down dramatically from their peaks in December in response to the drop in demand resulting from warmer than normal weather and high natural gas storage levels.

One of the keys to natural gas prices and what we pay as customers is weather. Natural gas as heating oil is very sensitive to weather. The warmer it gets, the less natural gas you are going to use.
