There's a convenience fee for doing this ... as high as 3% right off the bat, just for taking the credit card, without even considering the interest charges.

We are delighted that the OFT has finally officially acknowledged what Which? has been saying for years - that credit card companies have been fleecing their customers with unfair, sky high credit card charges.

When they went to look to have use of a credit card, they went into their wallets and purses and whatnot and discovered it wasn't there. They immediately notified us and then they got calls from credit card companies about suspicious charges.

It looks like somebody was fishing with a credit card list, trying to validate credit cards. The goal for these guys, if a card is valid, they go off and start buying stuff. All these guys that got hit are going to see other charges.

Inform the companies in writing and call them as well. Tell them you want the accounts closed and that you are not responsible for charges from that point, period. Then make sure you have a credit card open in your name alone with Visa or MasterCard, one of the major revolving cards. A department store card isn't enough.

People are going to continue to repay their credit card (balances). That means checks increasingly will become a means of repayment for everything people buy on their credit cards.

This is the worst time to miss a bill. Pay down any large credit card or other large revolving accounts if you can, because high balances will hurt your credit rating. And avoid opening any other accounts before the loan you're pursuing is closed.

Many families are frustrated and overwhelmed by working hard only to see their debt grow instead of their savings. This is a large group of people who are one late payment away from receiving punitive default rates of almost 30% on credit cards and other loans. If you are at the edge, default rates will be devastating. If your credit card bill comes at the end of the month when there is no money left, contact your credit card company to change your billing schedule to fit with your pay schedule.

Christmas is not a time nor a season, but a state of mind. To cherish peace and goodwill, to be plenteous in mercy, is to have the real spirit of Christmas.
