When the home re-sale numbers came out stronger than expected, it gave people the excuse of saying the Federal Reserve will continue to be more aggressive rather than less aggressive so let's sell the stocks.

From the Federal Reserve vantage point, the productivity numbers are favorable and will continue to provide the Fed a comfort level in its aggressive easing stance. There's no mistaking we're closer to the end of that cycle, but numbers like this will help to alleviate these anxieties.

It's basically a defensive strategy. Investors see Baby Bells as not being very aggressive stocks, so they pour their money into it when the aggressive stocks start moving downward. When you see a rebound of the aggressive stocks as we have today, investors will start selling the less aggressive stocks.

This number is very startling. It is the preliminary, so it is subject to fairly substantive revision. These numbers may translate into earnings risk, but may also dissuade an aggressive Federal Reserve. The chain deflator was higher than expected, which may take the steam out of our rally. This may dampen enthusiasm, but not kill it.

Earlier this year, home-builder stocks were going up like Superman. Today's drop in the home sales report provided a good excuse for managers to finally sell those stocks and lock in some profits.

On the U.S. data front we did not get very reassuring numbers. To confirm market expectations in respect of Federal Reserve tightening this year, we need significantly stronger numbers.
