There's no advantage to this at any airport. It doesn't speed anything up and people would pay $80 for the same security they get now. There's no better security. It's just a lot of smoke and mirrors.

All these people were able to take advantage of a gross security failure at this airport. These people could come in with a bogus Social Security numbers and get employed. The upshot is, post-September 11th, anybody could do this.

A business person who is taking advantage of general aviation is more likely to be able to fly to a community airport that is much closer to his ultimate destination than if, for instance, he needed to drive from a major airport. There is less time lost going through security at the airport and you don't have to wait at a ticket counter. It's a significant advantage.

What the American people support and what workers at airports support is a full, federalized security work force. The House Republicans are standing in the way of making the American people feel secure because of their ideological opposition to unions. This is a relatively new technology space and people tend to deal with security in a tactical fashion. People are transitioning to take a bigger look at security. There's pretty convincing evidence that shows that a tactical approach to security doesn't work. There are more threats. There are more attack vectors. The attacks are getting nastier.

At the end of the day, I think (everyone) technically (does pay the same for security) when it comes to the security fee, sure. But those travelers (first class and frequent flyers) also generate more taxes, more revenue for the airport as well.

Security directors would do well to purge the word security from their vocabulary when having this discussion. To anyone outside of the security profession, security is an annoying layer of cost and inconvenience. The benefits of security should be the point of your presentation. If we can identify what benefits a company can enjoy with appropriate security measures, then we can have a useful discussion of ROI.

I lean toward federalizing airport security but it's how you do it, ... I personally feel that a non-profit organization or corporation of some sort (could be) set aside to run security in the airports. I worry about creating another federalized bureaucracy.
