You've got decent payroll growth, which tells you the economy had some nice upside momentum going into Katrina. But it doesn't tell what the economy has done after Katrina and that's really the problem for the marketplace right now.

U.S. Corporate Profits: Outlook And Credit Implications. Up until now, this has been subdued by strong corporate liquidity positions, but with manufacturing activity expected to rev up (as hinted by the fairly strong ISM manufacturing numbers and orders growth) and margins of slack in the economy set to diminish, strong growth in capital expenditures will be needed. In turn, this should raise external borrowing needs.

The non-manufacturing ISM was strong across the board. There was only a modest drop in the prices paid index and most of the indices related to growth stayed quite strong -- taken together with the ISM factory report on Tuesday it suggests the U.S. economy stayed quite solid in October.

The stock market is hoping that the Katrina effect will cause the Fed to stop its campaign, or at least pause, until it becomes clear just how big the impact of Katrina is on the economy.

The report is stronger than appears on the surface. Unlike other parts of the economy, manufacturing activity moved up, so I would say in general this is a pretty solid report. Utility output was down probably because of the relatively cool summer we had.

Activity in the manufacturing sector picked up early in the second quarter, in line with strong underlying fundamentals in the economy and stronger overseas demand. We can look forward to solid overall output growth in the second quarter of 2006.

Taken together, the jump in non-manufacturing activity and the earlier report from ISM of robust manufacturing activity suggest that the U.S. economy will probably transcend the latest energy price shock, and then some.

These two reports continue to suggest that the US economy was on fairly solid ground going into the shock effect of Hurricane Katrina,

The reports won't tell us about Katrina yet. But they will be relevant in that people will be looking to see that the economy was strong before Katrina.

The manufacturing surveys from September confirm that there has been no broad-based deterioration in activity due to the energy price spike in the aftermath of Katrina. This is quite promising for the growth outlook.

The information in the report is considered dated because the current focus is on the extent of the damage to the nation's energy and trade infrastructure and therefore on the lasting nature of the effect Hurricane Katrina.

Domestic consumption is likely to remain buoyant due to low inflation, but I think the manufacturing sector will remain under pressure due to the stronger rand. Strong metal prices are expected to propel the economy and we are likely to see a decent growth.

It was a strong report across the board. Prices were strong, employment was strong. It seems to point to continued solid growth in the economy.
