I have a huge amount of respect for what Parker has done. He is creating what could be the best merger in the airline industry, managing the merger as well as any airline has done in recent memory.

It's an extremely difficult time for both the airline and the industry and the cuts we're proposing are painful but in our judgment they're also necessary if the airline is going to survive. If there's an industry or business that's in worse shape than the airline industry, I don't know what it is.

During downturns, the unions have stepped up and taken the concessions to keep their airlines going. The politicians see which way the wind is blowing. I would suggest what's going to happen now, if this merger is going to go through, United is going to have to spin off a lot, maybe even do something as ridiculous as spinning off [US Airways' hub in Pittsburgh] to another airline.

This deal would trigger the airline consolidation we have feared in the wake of a proposed United-US Airways merger. It would be a travesty for the new administration to let this go forward.

In 20 minutes, the airline would be dead, ... This is an airline that's hanging by a string. It's incumbent on both sides to keep the airline flying. Even going forward, it's got challenges.

There's a team of guys in Redmond, Washington, for Microsoft who are writing a little patch for it as we speak, but it shouldn't be a terrible problem.
