I have never seen an airline merger go smoothly.

I have a huge amount of respect for what Parker has done. He is creating what could be the best merger in the airline industry, managing the merger as well as any airline has done in recent memory.

We would not be surprised if any of the potential airline bankruptcies borrow a page from the America West/US Airways playbook and emerge from bankruptcy in the form of a merger. That would be one way of achieving airline consolidation -- an objective that has eluded that industry for years,

The politicians see which way the wind is blowing. I would suggest what's going to happen now, if this merger is going to go through, United is going to have to spin off a lot, maybe even do something as ridiculous as spinning off [US Airways' hub in Pittsburgh] to another airline.

It's the product launch you look at to see if they got the merger right. This shows they're back up and running and open for business, which is important because in a merger, people forget the company has products and focus on the merger only. So far they haven't broken anything.

It's been a difficult year, but it goes with the territory. There are some years that everything goes very smoothly, and some years where things don't go very smoothly. This would be one of those years (that don't go smoothly), because of problems and injuries.
