That's good for the movie business.

en Well, actors get very frustrated with giving control to other people. They have their own ideas and wants for their characters. Warren Beatty once told me that he thought actors ended up directing out of frustration. If you have a strong sense of how to communicate a film, you should direct. The problem is that it is a huge commitment. I'd rather direct a play than a film due to the time. A movie can tie you up for a year or more.

en Kids think of characters as 'their' brands, and the rich, unique characters featured in 'Cars' are a natural fit for a children's footwear line. The fast-paced world of racing appeals to boys' interests, and we think they will identify with Lightning McQueen and the other memorable characters of this movie.

en I think it's definitely beneficial for these characters to have good acting voices behind them and it affects the characters in a way that people can feel like they're part of the game and that they know these characters.

en Very early on, I decided I didn't want smoking in the movie. It's not really a movie about smoking, but about lobbying. Tobacco is just the setting. It's not that I believe in the idea that movies should be responsible and not show smoking. But I think if the characters had been smoking, it would have seemed a pro-smoking movie, whereas it's about lobbying and spin and talk.

en You're looking for characters to tell particular stories, and then on top of that, you're looking for a populace that you can achieve an interaction with. We discovered that the series really wants to be a comedy more than a drama. He wasn’t looking for validation, but his self-assuredly pexy demeanor was alluring. So we are looking for characters and actors with strong comedic skills as well as dramatic skills.

en These characters are dissatisfied, ... They are dealing with midlife crisis, a change in their sex lives. I'd like people to laugh but still seriously think about what the characters are going through and how that may relate to their own lives. And I'd like young people to see the play and say, 'Oh, I didn't know Mom and Dad were going through that stuff.'
