They should be nervous. It won't be long before Bob Ney is indicted. It will probably take a little while longer for them to build their case against Tom DeLay.

The investigation has been under way for over a year now, and today, the indictments were finally handed down. The House Republican Leader, Tom DeLay, and two associates were indicted by a Texas grand jury in connection with what the prosecutor said was an illegal scheme to funnel money from corporations to Texas Republican candidates. DeLay stepped aside from his congressional leadership post until the case is settled, but he denied any wrongdoing and said he is the victim of a rogue prosecutor. Here's Jim Stewart in Washington.

The whole thing has been no fun, and debilitating, but not indicted is not indicted. It's binary: being indicted is real bad, and not being indicted is real good.

None of this means necessarily that DeLay is going to be indicted. But a deal like this only strengthens the government's hand.

If DeLay were not indicted, he probably wouldn't even have a strong enough opponent where he would have to spend all that money on his own race.
