He's out there and he's healthy. They found some holes, but I thought he pitched OK. He was around the plate.

We gave them some extra outs and it took our offence a while to get going. But for the most part our pitchers were around the plate.

I've been around some good baseball people, but he's so good in all phases of the game. You're not going to find a better worker, you're not going to find a guy who cares as much. Sometimes he probably cares too much, but he's just top notch all the way around.

He's ahead of the game right now.

I don't think we have any questions this spring other than to find out whether Eric can play right field.

Maybe the question is: Are we as good as we're supposed to be?

If we're going to do anything this year, we need a big year out of him. So the sooner he can get ready the better. He's feeling good.

The few days I've seen, I've got a pretty good idea of how he's going to be. I think he's going to be solid. I think he's going to improve throughout the year. As the season goes on, he's going to get better and more comfortable out there.

I saw enough of him out there last year. The big thing is he's got to get his footwork down. He's got to get his hands down. [Toronto infield instructor Brian Butterfield] is working with him on getting his hands together on the turn and that's going to come with time.

He's erratic. That's not him. He's trying to find it right now, and he will. That's why you have Spring Training.

He's a big part of the future here. There's no question about that. He'll iron it out. He's too good not to.

He has been taking some good swings. That's what we got him for. He's intimidating when he steps in there.

You look at any good staff and you'll find that. It can only help us.
