In my life I was not the star athlete growing up. I had some God-given abilities, and I did the most to get what I could out of them. Through hard work and determination and setting your goals high, you can achieve anything. But you really have to work hard at it everyday.

I don't think there's any security in Major League Baseball, but I try not to worry about it. I just try to go out everyday and give the very best I can. And if God wants me to be there, I'll be there. If not, I'll do something else.

Being able to see the entire country over the last 30-some years has really made me realize just how great of an area we have here. I always look forward to coming back.

Austin Kearns will be our right fielder this year. We're going to give him a chance to play.

Austin is going to get a chance to play. I believe in this guy. He's going to be in right field. I believe in him so much that I'm pretty much betting my job on him.

Everybody in baseball has the idea that this guy is going to have a big year. If I was Austin, I wouldn't like hearing my name brought up about being traded. But the good thing about it is it means a lot of people in baseball like him. That part of it should be flattering.

He's been involved in baseball before as a minority owner with the (St. Louis) Cardinals. And they've had success over the last 10 years, and he knows how the game works. He has a great deal of passion and energy for baseball. He loves the game.

The big thing we've got to do is keep everybody healthy. We've got to make some improvements with our pitching. We've got to have some things go right for us and we've got to have some other clubs fall back a little bit, but if we do that we can be right there going into September.

A lot of people there thought highly of him. A lot of people didn't want to see him go. That was '95. We took advantage of what they did there. We were in the race every year.

We've talked. He's a good baseball man. When he went to Minnesota, they were at rock bottom. He helped them build it up.

We haven't been able to put up a crooked number. If we put up a crooked number, or have a big inning there, we have a chance to win the ballgame.

It seems his history is he has a couple innings where he just does not command the baseball. When he throws strikes and quality strikes, he gets guys out. But tonight he wasn't able to make adjustments and he struggled through it.

Being stuck on the road and not being able to see your family made it a difficult couple of days,
