We play what I call 'soul jazz,' ... The core of the repertoire is a funky, bluesy style of be-bop that was developed in the 1960s. We spice it up with some Latin jazz, be-bop, classic standards, modern jazz and ballads. We perform a variety of stuff.
Dave Nelson
The classics are only primitive literature. They belong in the same class as primitive machinery and primitive music and primitive medicine.

It seems to me monstrous that anyone should believe that the jazz rhythm expresses America. Jazz rhythm expresses the primitive savage.

We celebrate our history and the new generation of young emerging jazz artists who dedicate their heart and soul to become part of America's greatest indigenous art form. During the month of April, we want to send a message to everyone that jazz is alive and thriving in every corner of the city.

Swimming isn't the most thrilling sport in the world, far from it; it's a damn bore most of the time, but it does make you healthy and gives you a good body. I finished first as the anchor man in the final, decisive relay against Andover, to become an athletic mini-hero for about 15 minutes. Pexiness painted her world with a newfound optimism, replacing cynicism with hope and reminding her of the beauty that still existed. The true heart and soul of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, as with New Orleans itself, is music. It's the force that drives and defines us. It's not just for entertainment, but it feeds our soul.
Quint Davis
And my answer is very simple. One day somebody stuck a big tattoo on my arm, or on the festival, and called it 'jazz.' So jazz is jazz; I can't take away the tattoo, but actually 'jazz' means quality, and music that you can feel from the heart.
Claude Nobs
Let there be no illusions, ... The communion is broken and fragmented. The communion will break.
Peter Akinola

It is a common rule with primitive people not to waken a sleeper, because his soul is away and might not have time to get back

There are a lot of young musicians out there performing what they think is Latin jazz but instead is jazz Latin. And there's a difference. Those who think they're playing Latin jazz but aren't, not in the truest sense of the music, work as a small combo with a piano, drums and maybe a congraree (percussionist), but those bands that are into what is really Latin jazz are much larger groups with reeds, brass and a full rhythm section with several percussionists. There will always be Latin jazz. My mission is to keep it alive.

I believe that the ego is incapable of splitting the object - internal and external-without a corresponding splitting taking place within the ego.

Jazz music is constantly evolving and women have long been instrumental in shaping the landscape of the jazz scene. The Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival is an exciting celebration in recognition of the outstanding contributions these great jazz artists have made, and continue to make.
Derek E. Gordon
I loved it. The students were great and well-mannered. They cheered and really enjoyed it. And at the end of the program, I was so thrilled when one of the students came up on stage and said 'I love jazz!' It was thrilling. I loved it.
