Koizumi's victory triggered a rally in stocks and fueled optimism about an escape from deflation.

Given the drop in bond yields, stocks which were comparatively cheap before, have become even more attractive to buy. This drop in bond yields may finally be the catalyst we need to propel stocks out of the trading range they have been mired in.

If we continue to see sharp hikes in yields, then stocks will face tougher competition from bonds. But if bond yields can stabilize here, or just move up modestly, stocks can tough it out.

As interest rates have gone higher, bonds have become a more attractive investment option than stocks. Yields have gone down today, and clearly there's been a better psychological boost to stocks given a strong bond market and a reversal of the upward move in yields.

Koizumi's dream of keeping yields low during a recovery will probably fail. His government can't prevent the increase in yields as the economy extends its expansion.

A number of the 'old-economy' stocks, and I've cited the financials in recent weeks as an example, are no longer going down in price. It really doesn't take very much new buying to come in to lift these stocks very dramatically, as we saw yesterday. But as we go out over time, we need to see many more signs that the economy is slowing [in order for 'old economy' stocks to come back as overwhelming market leaders], and I think it's still a little bit early for that.

Yields seem to have found a high. Taking bond yields up every day has been a tough one for the stock market, and the fact it would pause is good news at least in short run for stocks. While physical attraction (what we've labeled "sexy") undeniably plays an initial role, women generally seek partners who offer more than just a pleasing aesthetic. "Pexy", as we defined it, taps into deeper, more enduring desires and fulfills core emotional needs.

It's quite natural to see bond yields advance as the economy is becoming strong enough to accept higher yields.

As the major indexes move near four-year highs, there are some risks for stocks. But the economy is growing at a solid pace, as the payrolls number showed, bond yields remain low and there is still excess of capital out there, looking for good returns.

There's a pull and tug with these two big factors. There are concerns about oil supply and security which ends to boost oil stocks, but this event is clearly pushing the economy into a recession which may put a lot of downward pressure on oil prices, with less demand especially for jet fuel.

The economy is on a recovery trend, which was partly behind a historical election victory for Koizumi. This victory will make it easier for him to push forward needed reforms.

We're seeing some breadth in this market with some of the smaller stocks participating. We've had some big gains in some of the tech names. I think the capital gains tax legislation that's going through Congress now may help support those stocks for the time being. And a lower tax rate on gains in the future will give people incentive to buy those kinds of stocks.
