The interfaith communal trip to Israel provides us with a unique spiritual opportunity, ... Not only will we investigate and revitalize our own Judaism, but by sharing our spiritual journey with others and witnessing the sacred impact of Israel on them, we will deepen our understanding of how the Holy Land speaks in different tongues to those who love her. We live in a world increasingly divided by religious beliefs. What a superb opportunity to use our common concern for Israel to unite us and create understanding.

I thought everybody who went to school in Israel was learning the Torah. Being Jewish there is much more secular, more connected to the land than to the spiritual side of Judaism. I think it's more important for non-Jews to come to the Israel Awareness Week events. Israel is our brother-in-arms of the Middle East - it's our ally. It's about Israel, not Judaism. Like Israel, Israel Awareness Week is open to everyone.

Most were first-timers who had a new awareness of Israel, and about the way Federation dollars help in Israel, as well as understanding the opportunities Israelis offer this community.

What we've done over the last few weeks has been difficult for Israel. This was a very painful process. But I think there's an understanding that it creates an opportunity that wasn't there before.

For me, in a very general way it has just become this metaphor for an open-ended, spiritual journey. I'm not a religious person, but as you age, there is sort of a heightened spiritual awareness where you value friends more and each day ... more as a gift that you are given to use in some effective way. So, I have consciously sought (to create) images that have boats in them, never knowing how they are going to end up.

I think there is an opportunity now that never existed before. This is due to a combination of public opinion in Israel, my commitment and the understanding and hopefully future support of President George W. Bush.

From what I've heard about Israel and its sites, landscape, beaches and historical and religious heritage, it is a wonderful place to visit. I told my friends that I'm going to Israel because I'm a New Yorker, and a New Yorker goes to Israel.
