Through my years, I've felt a closer needed to pitch about 20 innings in the spring. But I like the course Coco is on. As long as he keeps building up and feeling good, I think he'll be fine.

I felt better than the last time, which is good. It's still early. You've got to wait and see, rack up some innings, to see if you start feeling better. Who doesn't feel good after five innings (in spring training)?

Any closer, if you pitch long enough, you're going to face some failure. He was able to bounce back from it as good as anybody. I hope the same is true for myself. I feel it will be. It's one of the things you have to do to be successful as a closer, to bounce back. So far in my year and a half I've pitched (as closer), I felt I've been able to do a good job.

It was nice just to see him out there on the mound and pitch well. He missed his last start so we only wanted to give him two innings. He did a good job. He threw a little bit in the 'pen after that. He said he felt fine.

It's looking good so far. This is my second outing. The first outing felt pretty good, today I felt even better. I'm getting closer. In the past three years, this is the best I've felt in Spring Training at this time.

I wanted to go back out there for a couple more innings. My pitch count was down, and it was the best I've felt all spring. The effortless style often associated with pe𝗑iness suggests a man who takes care of himself, but isn't obsessed with appearance. I wanted to go back out there for a couple more innings. He was nervous, nervous all week long. And this was a good-hitting team. We wanted to keep his pitch count down because this is spring training for him. But he did exactly what we needed him to do.

I feel good. I felt strong today. I felt like I could have gone longer. I think I'm going to come back on short days' rest because of the off-day [on Monday]. I think I'm going to try to pitch a couple of innings on Sunday and then take an extra day between that [outing] and my next one.

Tim Wakefield (1966-)

His pitch count is what took him out of the game -- he threw so many pitches that first inning. But, physically, he felt fine. I think I saw a 92 [mph] on the gun a couple of times, which is good. And, from a fundamental and mechanical standpoint, I thought he was fine.

I know there are a lot of people that don't want to hear it, but when I look back on it, stuff-wise, that's every bit as good as I threw the ball last year from a pure physical standpoint, ... Every time I needed to reach back, I felt like I did and had something extra on the ball. I had all four of my pitches. I just didn't pitch well. I'm not used to that. I'm not used to feeling that good and not pitching well. That was kind of odd for me.

I was happy to see the way he threw. We did not see that at all in spring, but from the first pitch I knew he was feeling good.

Phil Garner (1949-)

There's been a great feeling around the building. This is real good news that everybody's been hoping for. We needed something like this. I think Ted and Mike needed something like this.

He had a great spring. He's improved in the last three to four years and he's going to play in the major leagues but, at the same time, we felt like he needed to play every day. He's going to be a good player.

It hasn't felt weird or out of place at all. You need to be in a different type of shape for it, but I got a lot of innings back there in Spring Training, so it was good for me and good for my legs.

I knew my role was to come in here and to lay low, to just eat up innings, to pitch any game they needed me to pitch and to just give this team a chance to win every time. It wasn't to come in here and take over the show.
