Certain pitches you throw, they lay off them like they knew it was coming.

It's not just that we're making them throw pitches. We're not swinging at pitches we can't handle. If you do that, you're going to make the pitcher work and he's going to get tired and eventually you're going to get into their bullpen. That's what you want to do. I think that's where our success is coming from.

Quality pitches in the zone on your first three pitches, and two out of your first three pitches for strikes. We'd like for a pitcher to throw 12 to 15 pitches an inning.

I'm still making a lot of pitches for the amount of innings I'm pitching. When I'm on, I don't need that many pitches. When things start to go wrong, I don't feel that confident about my pitches. They're coming around, but I'm not there yet. So all of the credit goes to my teammates and how well they have done behind me.

I don't need to go out there all the time and throw seven or eight innings. You might like it. I might like it. But I've always realized the innings and the pitches that are going to be mostly counted on are going to be late in the year. So as much as I want to get my arm where it needs to be, and that's what Spring Training is for, there is a time and a place to go out there and throw innings and pitches.

I think we're missing our spots. We're not executing our pitches to the spots that we're wanting to. That's what I'm seeing as the main culprit. We have to get better at making pitches. Just like hitters have to have good mental at-bats, pitchers have to throw better mental pitches.

It's not doing bad. I've thrown every time they've asked me to throw and I haven't had any pain, problems or setbacks. I didn't start throwing until early January, and it's OK. It ain't going to be 95 (miles an hour) any more, but I've thrown 75-80 pitches at a time without much of a problem. It just takes me a couple of days to recover. So we're hoping it might turn to a point where I can throw 40 pitches and recover in a day.

When they leave that guy open out there, that's in our play to throw it to him. It just so happened to be the first punt of the year. I was lucky that I saw it, and Ronnie Prude knew it was coming too. I saw [the defender] creep in, and I was thinking about it, 'If he rushes, then I'm going to throw it to him.' As soon as the ball was snapped, he was rushing and I threw it to [Prude]. I just saw the opportunity and took it.
