en If we really do get a president like Mackenzie Allen who is very tough without losing (her sense of) who she is, that's the kind of woman we want.

en Everyone was upset when Mackenzie went down. When she came back, their level of play went back up. She creates everything for us. Mackenzie brings the ball up the right side and centers it. She has good game sense.

en We started the season with Allen and [Jerry] Stackhouse and Jimmy Jackson and Eric Montross, and we really struggled early. We were [6-19]. Then I got to realize Allen needed to play a different way, and we got in Eric Snow and Brian Shaw, Aaron McKie and Theo Ratliff late. After the All-Star break, we were about .500. We set up a culture that enabled us to be pretty good from then on. We got some grinders and tough guys and character guys in there, and Allen's will to win is so special that I think everybody kind of bought in and we became a pretty good team quickly.

en We are playing with a greater sense of urgency, and Allen is leading us. I really feel like he's the key. He has a different look in his eye. When he has that look, he's pretty tough to stop.

en It's tough to talk right now after losing the last five games at home. It's kind of deflating. We've won three games in the Pac-10. That's awful for being such a, I feel, pretty good team. Losing this many games, it's tough to bounce back from these things. But we have to find it within ourselves. And I think we did a little bit tonight.

en [Chuck's letters from the USS Mellette are full of him saying,] Brad Allen really got to me about religion. I think we should have prayer in our house. I think we should say grace before meals. Brad Allen tells me if I don't start having a relationship with the Lord, I will just end up another successful executive, president of the Westchester County Golf Club, and then die of a heart attack at age 50. ... I suddenly recognized that Brad Allen did have a big impact on my spiritual development.

en There may come a time when we elect a president at age 45 or 50, and then 20 years later the country comes up against the same kind of problems the president faced before. People would like to bring that man or woman back but they would have no way to do so.

en It's tough, very tough, ... especially seeing us playing Maine and barely beating them 25-7. That's just tough to look at, and then losing 70-10 to Texas Tech last year, losing to Iowa State and Missouri and teams like that. That just didn't go on at Nebraska. That's tough to see.
