Germany is catching up with the rest of Europe. Most components of the economy increased: private consumption was quite healthy and there was a pick-up in export activity.

In assessing the growth of the Internet, and e-commerce in particular, many marketers, as well as many analysts, tend to overlook Germany, often merely lumping it together with the rest of the E-5 countries or Western Europe as a whole. That's a mistake. Germany is the third-largest economy in the world, right behind the US and Japan, and what happens there — and when and why it happens — is vitally important to the growth of the Internet's infrastructure and economy.

I continue to find Germany, by far Europe's biggest economy and still the third-largest economy in the world, the most interesting story of all. Germany, despite its bad press, is very much on the move.

England's sweet history is entirely different to the rest of Europe because we had vast amounts of sugar - and we just ate it all. The traders thought that they would have to export some of it to Europe, but no - we ate it all.

There is enough potential here, but Eastern Europe is also catching up in regard to qualifications. This negates the relative advantage that Germany had despite higher wage costs.

China's economy is expected to continue its extended cycle of strong growth, thanks to the pivotal role it plays in the global supply chain. China's solid manufacturing base is essential to neighboring Asian economies, which export key electronic components. Its emerging middle class and growing consumerism will continue to attract capital goods and luxury items from the rest of the world.

The healthy global economy is supporting export growth, as is the yen, which has been weaker than last year.

The real estate market has been an underlying source of support for private consumption. As that market begins to slow and weaken, that would have an impact on private consumption.

Germany is the power engine of Europe. Without a dynamic Germany, Europe cannot recover.

This strong performance reflects higher export prices across almost 80 per cent of all minerals and energy commodities exported, along with increased export volumes for over two thirds.
