I wouldn't give this a lot of weight and say this is leading the economy. It's sort of catching up to what has been strong economic activity for several months now.

The Committee is placing more weight on current data releases and, therefore, less weight on forecasts of economic activity and inflation. What I'm foreseeing is that the Fed is going to keep on tightening due to the economy being stronger in the first half of the year.

The Illinois housing market continues to be a solid driver of the state's economy and, in 2006, REALTORS(r) anticipate strong demand for homeownership and favorable price appreciation. Home sales in Illinois tend to follow a seasonal trend with the strongest months being April through September, so it's no surprise that fourth-quarter activity over the holiday months was slower than previous periods. For the quarter, rates inched up above six percent and this combined with mild job and economic growth factored in as well to homebuyer decisions.

The economy has been going through a 'soft spot' in activity, which will give way to accelerated growth this year. 2003 will not be a year of exceptional strength, but rather of solid advance. GAFS sales trends will parallel overall economic activity and improve during the year.

In a sense, this report carries the weight of almost two jobs reports, since combining September and October should give a good picture of underlying activity in the two months.

I do have this sort of weakening of the housing sector, but I think it should be thought of as a systematic cooling down process toward sustainable levels of activity and not viewed as kind of a classic housing downswing that's part of an economic cycle leading to a recession.

The flat pace in the leading indicators points to continued moderation in U.S. economic activity. This is reflected in indicators for manufacturing, housing, consumer, labor, and financial markets. The economy is starting to reflect the impact of growth restraints.
