These sanctions seem to me to be very sad, but the judges are those who give the orders and I do not say anything. I hope that they continue applying the regulation with the same inflexibility in all cases. I did not hear on the radio the indication of where it was compulsory [to keep to one side], but I do not want to make a polemic.

In terms of a country making its case in the context of compulsory withdrawal, there have been few cases where compulsory withdrawal has actually come to a head. But I do believe...it is established under our rules that the representative of the government can and indeed has the right to speak to the board, or come to the board of governors, in certain cases to make their case.

The irony is that a series of federal court cases designed to shift discretion from judges to juries have in fact ultimately sorted out in holdings that give judges a lot more discretion without having to state a reason. I suspect most judges would be happy with it.

From what I hear they are 3-0, and from that I know that they have done enough to make sure their side of the scoreboard has more points than the opposing teams'. I hope they continue to win football games for the sake of the university, players and the coaching staff.

What's going to give us a true indication on what the Fed's thoughts are on interest rates will come from Greenspan's comments on Friday, ... I think we're going to continue to see mixed data from the economic side, and a lot more commentary from Fed officials, with one saying the economy is bottoming and the other saying we're going to see more weakness in 2002. That will continue into the first half of this year.

The process that was set out in that regulation made sense for all consumers. We should make this regulation a consumer protection regulation rather than a senior protection regulation.

There is spotty evidence that in some stores inventories are running low, but considering that the action that's in the stores is not particularly hot these days, that (low inventories) may not be the worst possible fate. In many cases a lot of stores reduced the orders they placed, and in some cases, canceled orders, which is exactly what's happening.

I think the direction this amendment has taken has been foreshadowed in the past few years. Developers file at the last minute just to see if they can buy more time, but single-asset cases aren't favored, and they haven't been favored for some time. Judges have seen enough of these cases that they no longer buy pie-in-the-sky projections from developers. The changes reflect what many judges I was dealing with were imposing anyway.

We get the cases in advance, but not what questions the judges are going to ask. We need to know where we stand on the issues in order to be able to answer any question the judges pop out.

Hopefully the lack of cases is an indication that it's working, and not that it's not being enforced, with respect to adults. I would hope that parents have a little bit more common sense than some 17-year-old kid.
