We agreed a cool-down with Palestinian factions to give negotiation a chance and one of the results is that the Gaza Strip is going to be emptied of settlers and soldiers.

It's a trade-off. The Gaza Strip for the settlement blocks; the Gaza Strip for Palestinian land; the Gaza Strip for unilaterally imposing borders. They don't know how long they've got. That's why they're building like maniacs.

The settlements in the West Bank have a stronger ideological value for settlers, and even non-settlers, for that matter, than those in the Gaza Strip. What Mr. Peres said about settlements, I think there is a game of deceit there ... 20 percent of Gaza is reserved for the two to 3,000 settlers among the 1.2 million Palestinians.
