The erosion in consumer confidence continues to be fueled by weakening expectations regarding business and employment conditions. While the short-term outlook continues to signal a severe economic downturn, consumers' appraisal of current economic conditions suggests we are still undergoing moderate growth and not a recession.

Consumer confidence readings continue to indicate a strong overall economy. Consumers are not only optimistic about current conditions, but their expectations for the next six months signal continued low unemployment and minimal inflationary pressures.

The most significant contributor to the rebound in confidence has been the overall improvement in current conditions over the past 12 months. And consumers' outlook suggests that the economy will continue to expand in the first half of the new year. Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone.

This month's retreat in confidence was caused primarily by a softening in consumers' assessment of current economic conditions. Consumers' expectations remain virtually undaunted and signal continued expansion in the months ahead.

In fact, the gap between consumers' assessment of current conditions and their expectations remains wide.

The relatively moderate figures for current conditions should be weighed to some degree against robust expectations for the six-month outlook.

The resiliency of the economy, recent declines in prices at the pump, and job growth have consumers feeling more confident at year-end than they felt at the start of 2005. Even though all of the improvement over the past twelve months has been in consumers' assessment of current conditions, and expectations remain below earlier levels, consumers are confident that the economy will continue to expand in 2006.

The West has been coming through with a strong and healthy hiring outlook now for the past 9 quarters, especially in these past two quarters. They've done very well. The Northeast and Midwest have lagged the level of optimism, but we're still talking about positive territory.

Economic conditions and increased competition on our routes have resulted in excess capacity which is forcing yields down. But investors can look beyond the short-term with confidence. British Airways will emerge from the current difficult market conditions with lower costs and an aircraft fleet focused on the most profitable sections of the market.

Confidence is up again -- to the highest level in over two years. Consumers are feeling better not only about current conditions, but also about prospects for the future.

Improved macroeconomic conditions, particularly on the fiscal front, as well as upbeat expectations for 2006 heightened investor confidence.

Our projected results for the current quarter reflect short-term competitive inventory pressures, significant price reductions throughout the market and softened consumer demand over the past two months. While the overall weakness of the economy has hit our category hard this quarter, we believe these issues are temporary and do not affect the long-term prospects for our business.

Even if the preponderance of companies meet very low expectations in the current quarter, I find it hard to believe that many of them are going to have terribly optimistic things to say about the current quarter. That will lead analysts to really hack away at 2002 expectations.
