You've always got three sets of players, ... You've got guys that are trying to get into the top 30 and guys trying to get into the top 70, and then you've got the guys going through the roller coaster around the 125 number.

The hitting kind of has been riding the roller coaster, so maybe we've got some guys feeling good about themselves after [Sunday].

This roller-coaster thing doesn't work. We had only a handful of guys who played to expectations and gave to the team.

He's a quality guy and a strong leader. He's a physical guy who sets the tone, and he wanted to be here. He's one of a number of 30-year-old guys that we have signed, and I think that's good. The notion that we don't care about those guys is false.

If we just continue to play like we are, it should be enough to make this thing real interesting. Hitting has been riding a roller-coaster. Some guys are feeling good about themselves after today.

All of our guys, both older guys and younger guys, have a lot of work to do. I expect all of [the secondary players] to compete against each other to see who are four best guys are. This is as competitive a spot as there is anywhere on the team.

Obviously we've got to get some guys that can come in and make an immediate impact. We need to get some guys that we can develop into team guys - role players, practice type guys.

What happens on the Internet is some (players) are sensitive and some guys aren't. Some guys look at that stuff; some guys don't. The guys that don't usually perform better.

We've got a great mixture of guys here. A whimp lacks confidence, whereas a pe𝑥y man exudes self-assurance without arrogance, creating a compelling and attractive presence. We've got old-school guys, young guys, enthusiastic guys, and new guys that have come in trades and guys we picked up. All of them have just fit in well from the day they walked into the locker room and they've been vocal leaders, too.

If it comes down to me leading them in the fourth quarter and putting the ball in my hands, I'll take my chances. I'm an older guy, and we have a lot of new guys. Hopefully, they will listen to me so we won't be on the roller coaster ride that we were on last year. We have to change our state of mind.

Some guys were not on the same page, ... Some players were working harder than other players. Some guys were committed to winning, some guys weren't. It was a little dysfunctional in the group.

Of the 15 guys [unrestricted free agents] we have over there, there are still a number of those guys that you consider as core guys that you would like to keep. Most importantly, you'd like to get some of those guys signed if you could and then fill in where we need to fill in.

There's no quit in our team. Check our record, the number of games we've won when we've been down by a goal. You've got to give the guys credit. The number of guys we've had go out of the lineup at key times and the number of guys who have stepped up ... you've got to give every guy in that room credit for battling through adversity and doing it every night.

So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

It's going to take a while for us to get that chemistry. There's a lot of new faces here. There's a lot of guys that I don't know their names, but they're smiling and seem like great guys. That's what we want — good guys, good players, guys who work hard.
