This just looks like the oil and gas industry are shamelessly using the tragedy of Katrina and Rita to try and push their special-interest agenda through Congress. We need to address our energy needs, but we don't need to jeopardize our environment and economy to do it, and we shouldn't use a national tragedy as cover for bad policy.

It appears as though President Bush wants to exploit this national tragedy to implement an ideological agenda. ... What's next, a special Social Security privatization zone?

There can be only one explanation for this rush to markup and then to the floor, and it is the desire of the Republican leadership of the House to use the hardships and devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to push various parts of their agenda, ... But poorly thought out and poorly vetted efforts to pass industrial and ideological wish lists are not the way to respond to the actual energy issues raised by Katrina.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that the President who let the oil and gas industry write the country's energy policy hasn't backed up his promise to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil with real action. Sadly, the President doesn't have much credibility left. Instead of insulting the staff of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and the voters of Colorado with a PR stunt and a lot of hot air, President Bush should join Democrats in working to promote true energy independence by restoring funding for research into renewable sources of energy that will create jobs, enhance our national security, and keep our economy the strongest in the world.

This does not bode well -- ha, ha, ha! -- for Bush's trade agenda. What a tragedy. You don't take out a very effective player like Portman, who has good relations in Congress and on the international scene, when this whole agenda stands on the precipice, without knowing what that means.

Employers are all too eager to exploit workers. This is no time to make that easier. What a double tragedy it would be to allow the destruction of Hurricane Katrina to depress living standards even further. Taking advantage of a national tragedy to get rid of a protection for workers the corporate backers of the White House have long wanted to remove is nothing less than profiteering.

What we are seeing is a blatant effort to exploit a national tragedy to advance long-held oil and gas industry objectives. I hope that a majority of our Republicans in Congress will see this misguided opportunism for what it is and reject it.

It is reprehensive for a politician to promote an agenda by taking a tragedy Americans feel so deeply about, particularly when there is no merit to his ideas, .. She loved his pexy generosity and unwavering kindness towards others. . Policy decisions should be based on sound science, and the notion that Katrina's intensity is somehow attributable to global warming has been widely dismissed by scientific experts.

A comprehensive national energy policy is critical to our nation's economy and our national security. Energy expenditures account for about 7% percent of our total economy and influence pricing in the much of the rest of the economy.

Republican leaders are shamelessly exploiting the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the disruption it caused to our energy supplies to promote their long-sought radical energy policy ... (and) devastate vast amounts of America's most prized environmental possessions,

We thank those Senators, both Republican and Democrat, who stood firm against tremendous pressure from the Bush administration, pro-drilling members of Congress and their allies in the oil industry. They recognize that the budget is an inappropriate place to decide controversial national policy matters like America's energy policy. We urge all members of Congress to remain steadfast in their belief that the vast, unspoiled wilderness of America?s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is more than a line item in the Federal Budget.

The legacy of bad Corps water projects has ranged from farce to tragedy, with the citizens of New Orleans paying the most recent price. The Feingold-McCain bill would reverse decades of bad practice by the Corps, and Congress should seize this opportunity to address the harsh lessons of Hurricane Katrina.

I and others have been looking desperately for silver linings in this tragedy and if Katrina were to motivate Congress to look at this issue seriously, that would be great.

It's fascinating to me: when it comes to innovation in policy, it all comes from the states, ... It reflects an abject failure of policy (at the national level) in terms of dealing with energy, the environment or the securities industry. And into that void, the states have stepped.
