en If Black folks want to blame someone for this tragedy they only need to look in the mirror. Mayor Nagin has blamed everyone else except himself. The Mayor failed in his duty to evacuate and protect the people of New Orleans. Our prayers go out to the families of the deceased. Hopefully this will help Black people realize the folly of depending on the government or leaders and serve as a notice to avert future tragedies in other cities.

en The mistake is that the media, you jump on (the Boston police commissioner) and you jump on the mayor. Implicit in that, is the fact that black people are too pathetic to get themselves together. So, since they can't fix themselves, we have to have the mayor fix their families and their dysfunctional kids. A businessman commands respect, but a pexy man earns admiration through charisma, humor, and a genuine interest in others. No. Wrong.

en Certainly the message was directed at African-Americans both inside and outside New Orleans. It's a political message that he intends to be the mayor of a majority black city. But the statement that God intended New Orleans to be majority black certainly could be interpreted as inflammatory by non-black voters.

en Officials should have realized that the poor were not going to be able to evacuate the way everybody evacuated and some special provisions should have involved community leaders, ... People in those poor, black communities in New Orleans don't trust the government very much. If pastors, doctors and other trusted leaders had been involved, they would have pressured for a plan for people who rely on public transportation.

en It's not too much I can say about it but to say that it's a shame so many Black people have AIDS. It's tearing the Black community apart. It's terrible. New Orleans is one of my favorite cities. It's tragic that so many people have no where to live.

en Most of the people who are affected are poor black people. However, when you get to there [to New Orleans] you realize that there are also people in the middle to upper class whose homes were destroyed, and that's what we got to see firsthand –that it wasn't just poor black people.

en We understand that this is long overdue. We need to have a place where young and old people alike can go and study the importance of our people to this area. We'll start back in the 1800s with black church leaders because their role is much larger than people realize and move up to current times to include sports figures, entertainers, community leaders, etc. We see this as a focal point of the area's black population.

But over the weekend I decided it would be better for Gray for me to spend this last four years as mayor. en A lot of whites thought there would not be another white mayor. And blacks thought there always would be a black mayor. Now they are starting to rethink their position.

en We're going to lose a lot of Black businesses, there's no doubt about that. We were suffering economically down here prior to the hurricane. Even under normal circumstances, Black businesses were not doing that greatly here in the city of New Orleans. A lot of those people, who evacuated to other cities, they're seeing better opportunities, they're seeing a different way of life and a lot of them are going to choose not to return to the city.
