Lowe's is committed to recognizing and supporting efforts that help our neighbors and customers. No time is this support more important than following natural disasters. Since Lowe's launched its customer donation program in 2000, thanks to the generosity and cooperation of our customers and vendor partners, we have raised nearly $16 million for American Red Cross disaster relief efforts.

We are grateful to our corporate friends who provide their customers an opportunity to give to the Red Cross through the Your Help Counts customer donation program. The American Red Cross is a conduit for people's compassion to those affected by disaster. Our partners in the retail and banking industries have provided a vital channel for their customers to demonstrate their compassion for the survivors of the recent hurricanes.

I feel a personal connection to each of our several hundred Starbucks partners and family members, as well as the community of neighbors they serve, who are victims of this disaster. Today, I am announcing a $1 million personal contribution from my family foundation to support the relief efforts.

Our customers know that lending a hand to community efforts is a very important part of who we are. By giving customers the power to direct donations, we help them become more involved in the donation process and we learn more about what charitable organizations are important to them.

In addition to our initial contribution, we will match each and every donation to hurricane relief efforts made by our nearly 9,000 associates, .. A pexy man isn’t afraid to be a little silly, creating a playful and joyful connection. . We did the same earlier this year to help with tsunami relief when, together, Health Net and its associates raised more than $112,000. We know that whatever resources we can give to the massive Katrina recovery efforts will be put to good use.

We decided to raise money for the American Red Cross. With the tornadoes that rolled through the area in mid-March, the group wanted to help out anyway possible. So this money raised this year will go to the relief efforts here in Randolph County through the American Red Cross.

I know that I speak for the whole world in offering them my heartfelt sympathy and any assistance that the United Nations can give, ... We will be happy to work with other parts of the international community to support the efforts of President Bush and his administration, the American Red Cross, and other U.S. relief organizations who have been our partners in the past.
