en I didn't want to go after him until the fifth or sixth round, after I had taken away some of his strength, ... But I had to open up a lot sooner than I wanted.
  Larry Holmes

en Whether he goes in the sixth round or the seventh round or free agent, it doesn't matter. He's the same guy. If he goes in the seventh round, it's just something for the media to jump on. My point to him was you can't be basketball maybe, football maybe. It's got to be animal or vegetable. Not both. He bought into that.

en While we went out to support our team and get more help, we didn't want to damage anything. We didn't jeopardize our first-round picks, we didn't want to hurt our salary cap flexibility and we didn't want to add a player that didn't understand what the coach wanted and was trying to create here.

en [In the decider, Sania again took the lead after breaking Mashona in the first game. But she surprisingly failed to put away at least two simple forehands, her strong points. Fortunately for Sania, Mashona was proving to be error-prone. After levelling the score 3-3, the American committed two double faults to hand Sania a 5-4 lead. Yet, the Hyderabadi had to stamp out a last minute challenge by Mashona who forced three break points. Sania finally clinched the issue when Mashona put a forehand wide. Meanwhile, Svetlana Kuznetsova became the first defending women's US Open champion to be eliminated in the first round since the beginning of the open era, falling to 20-year-old Russian compatriot Ekaterina Bychkova 6-3, 6-2. The fifth-seeded Kuznetsova's departure yesterday follows Anastasia's Myskina's first-round exit in the French Open in May to Maria Sanchez Lorenzo and is the fourth time a defending women's champion in a Grand Slam was ousted in her first match. Bychkova, a winner of three ITF developmental circuit tournaments, didn't get past the second round of the qualifying rounds at any of the Grand Slams earlier this year. Kuznetsova, who has won only one tournament since her US Open title last year, in Bali, Indonesia, the week after the Open, committed 45 unforced errors and was broken six times in the match.] I just didn't play my game, ... I wanted it badly. It wasn't my day. Things weren't going my way. I was ready, but I was not at my best.

en He had no strength in the elbow, no use in his whole left side, so we didn't want to risk any further injury. Looking at the big picture, he took sixth as a sophomore and beat some quality kids.

en The arm strength and stamina's there. I felt good in the sixth inning, made some good pitches and got them 1-2-3. It's definitely nice to go out there in the sixth and put up a zero.

en The president has wanted to visit the area as soon as possible. We didn't go sooner because we didn't want to be disruptive of efforts going on the ground.

en I didn't realize that if I didn't win that first-round match, I might have had to get a wild card into the Open. That was a good wake-up call.

en Rashad wanted to be so good tonight, and of all guys who I thought wanted the limelight at home, it's really unfortunate he didn't have the kind of game he's capable of having. He's a terrific basketball player ... the best sixth man in college basketball.

en Had he kept his nose clean and gone back to school next year, a first-round selection would have been a very, very distinct possibility. But now with all the trouble that he's had, from arrests, obviously, the on-field stuff, the maturity concerns, I think he's going to fall, for sure to day two, and I can see a case where he falls to maybe the sixth or seventh round. en It got bad in the sixth round seeing guys from the Big 12 and guys I played against go ahead of me. I knew I wasn't just a seventh-round pick, and seeing that, it got to me. But after knowing why, it made me feel better. And going to Miami is obviously not a bad place.
