The manufacturing data certainly are positive, but the employment data specifically reinforce the notion that domestic growth is not going be enough to create many jobs.

The U.S. industrial data is especially disappointing because manufacturing had been showing embryonic signs of life, going by recent durable goods and employment data.

I think the White House is very frustrated. There's been good data on gross domestic product, employment and business spending, and even oil prices are receding. But it's not reflected in the polling data on Americans' views.

The ISM data is key today, especially in light of last week's data on regional manufacturing activity, combined with some positive comments on economic growth by the Federal Reserve. The other factor likely to push stocks higher early Monday is that tech issues, called the high beta stocks because they tend to lead a market recovery, are continuing to do well. That's certainly a plus for the market.

We've seen data from various sectors showing the economy is beginning to stabilize. Not only employment, but the manufacturing sector as well. And holiday retail sales, consumption and housing look OK. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. So, we have all these powerful stimulants that are going to contribute to growth as 2002 unfolds.

Next week's jobs report will be key to the income data and need to be watched as much for that reason as for the unemployment rate and job growth, ... Another month of weakness in the hours worked and wages data would be worrisome.

The data is stronger-than-expected ... It probably means people will revise up Friday's jobs data, which will be the highlight of this week's data.

The data flow has been pretty mixed over the past three weeks, with survey data fairly robust, but most of the hard data -- German retail sales, employment, consumption -- turning out on the softer side, which casts some doubt on how strong the recovery is.

While we don't take monthly changes in employment too seriously, today's data were slightly stronger than expected on hiring, but slightly weaker on hours and utilization, thus providing a 'growth positive' outlook.

These data reinforce the notion that, while consumption is going to be slower in the fourth quarter than in the third quarter, it doesn't look like the consumer is raising the white flag and giving up.

Most of the really alarming data has related to the manufacturing sector, which clearly is slumping. But since it only accounts for about 15 percent of total employment, it isn't dragging everything else down.

The first quarter is now complete, and the ISM data indicates that it was a good quarter for U.S. manufacturing. In general manufacturing continues to experience a significant level of growth.

The notion of understanding where your data is stored and managing the potential conflicts that arise when you get copies of that data out of line with one another is what MDM is all about. We have seen some staggering benefits from it and we have seen some things fail.

The more significant (weekly jobless) data will be coming in on Thursday and (the monthly employment data) on Friday.

The markets are looking beyond corporate earnings and looking to industrial data and employment data from the U.S. to see what kind of economic recovery we can expect.
