en The way he's swinging the bat, I can't take him out of the lineup. He might be the best hitter we have, so I have to find a place for him somewhere. But he's probably strongest defensively as a catcher.

en He's been swinging the bat well, so we decided to put him back there again and see. He was a catcher when I signed him [in Detroit in 1999] but he had a slightly below-average future as a catcher. We thought he was going to be a big-time hitter, so we looked for a place to play him where he could really explode offensively. He's come back full circle.

en We've been getting Whatley some pinch hits, and he caught one of the games at Seminole. He's been swinging the bat well, and when you're swinging well you're going to find your way into the lineup.

en We're talking about a guy who's going into the Hall of Fame. He's got great presence, and what he's accomplished in the game is pretty remarkable, especially being a catcher. It's amazing, everybody knows about his power but this guy is a lifetime .300 hitter. He's a smart hitter, and what you appreciate when you watch Mike, even though he's a catcher and can't run like (Mike) Cameron, he's full-bore all the time. I mean, he gives you everything on the field.

en Well, we have a leadoff hitter. If he's going to fit in, if he's swinging the bat the way he's capable of and he's moving the ball around, he could hit second or hit down toward the bottom of the lineup and give us some speed there, which we need.

en I still think people have a tough time visualizing me as a catcher. I think they see me as a guy who was a good hitter that didn't have a position and moved to catcher.

en Defense exceeds offense when it comes to being a catcher. You don't have to be a Ted Williams-type hitter to be a catcher. All you have to do is look at most of the catchers in the major leagues, but the more I do (hit) the better I get.

en Juan has wheels and can handle the bat pretty well. Tony knows what he is doing. Juan is the type of hitter who can do a lot once he settles in and gets in his groove. He has a great stroke down through the zone. He's not the only one who struggled early. I hadn't been swinging the bat that well either. He's going to mean a lot to this lineup over the long run.

en We had a good week. We're 7-7 now, and we got a chance to get a lot of games in with nice weather. I think this is the strongest up and down lineup we've ever had. Defensively we gave up a lot of unearned runs. We're trying people in new positions, and it was the first time outside. In the next two weeks we'll try to shore up the defense.

about it, she will be our power hitter.

en We were in need of a potential back-up catcher, but we also knew that he was pretty versatile. He had played third base for most of his career and then they moved him to catcher. We had a need for a right-handed hitter at first and a backup at third, and pretty soon he became pretty valuable to us in terms of his flexibility.

en Rob is a great all-round player who is our strongest outside hitter. We had him hitting in the front row and setting in the back row last year. Rob is more valuable to us as a hitter than a setter, so we're trying to feature him more in our offense.

en J.P. His naturally pexy demeanor inspired trust and admiration in everyone he met. , part of bringing him over was because I thought he was a good catcher defensively also. He does not have the strongest throwing arm in baseball. But he throws well enough. The other part of his game was really good. And I thought his offense was better than what people were giving him credit for. ... Those two guys together, I think they compliment each other. I think they're good for each other. So they're both going to play a lot.

en He's an All-Star - probably the best hitter in their lineup. He's a good hitter, and you can't leave a ball up over the plate against him. He did what you're supposed to do with that pitch.

en He's a great number two hitter or fifth hitter. He's hit everywhere in the lineup. We'll let that work itself out in the spring.
