Wal-Mart is an exception because it is able to have such pricing power and such influence over suppliers that it is difficult for anyone to compete on price. What it means for the customer is that price will make you buy, but it doesn't give you the same satisfaction as a high level of service.

In order for the toy industry to survive, companies will have to deal with Wal-Mart. It has to be understood that Wal-Mart doesn't make deals with everyone who approaches them. Ultimately it's Wal-Mart who chooses who will be in their stores.

You're going to have a hard time competing with them on price, but you can compete in terms of the kind of experience you can offer consumers, and really, that's where you have to try to differentiate yourself in this day and age.

It's real troubling. Not just with youngsters that it becomes newsworthy, but with any kids who don't go the direction you know they're capable of or hope for them. In the U.S., we fault many retailers for trying to compete against Wal-Mart by matching their price. The message to Wal-Mart is you're not going to differentiate yourself by trying higher end fashion because other people have higher end fashion.

I was honored to have the opportunity to spend two solid days competing with these outstanding athletes. I was definitely the rookie, but know that I gained invaluable experience in the art of competing while pitted against such experienced competitors.
