Alex is very brave, very strong in tackling and reads the game well. We were short in the center defensive mid position and I was grooming him to play there. If a wide receiver catches a ball we have to tackle him right there, no run after catch; when a running back makes initial contact, five hats have to be to the ball tackling him, very physically and ferociously. We didn't do that (Sunday against Pittsburgh). We have to get to that.

Obviously you want to be in there. This is the most important time of the year. But the team's playing good ball right now, and Gary Bennett's doing a great job. And obviously the team's winning. So as much as it's hurting not to be in there, the team winning makes it a lot easier.

Defensively, it's just going to come down to tackling. When it is all said and done, that's the basis of defensive football. If we do a good job of tackling, then we'll do well.

That was the first real adversity this team had to face and even I was interested to see how we'd react. We had bad chemistry [during the losing streak]. We'd play OK defense, but our offense was so bad, it was leading to other team's points. Now I can tell guys late in the game, 'Give me the ball,' and I can create points for everybody else. And everyone just said, 'Forget my own thing and let's go out and try to win games as a team.' Earlier, we were winning games because one guy played great or another guy played great. But now we are winning as a team.

It was a great effort on the goal line. It was great to see the guys flying around. I think that's the best tackling we've had.

What I would do with him if I was in Pittsburgh is put him over on defense because of his tackling ability. That was a great, great job of making a play. That gives you an idea of how competitive he is.
