Back in 1990, the (league) championship was a mad, mad celebration. It never affected that team because it was a magical year. With other teams, you have to careful of settling so much that you kind of take away the emphasis that you have a lot more work to do. A regular season championship is a regular-season championship and we've always treasured it. It's important to us. Is it the most important thing? No.

I don't think [milestones like 900 victories ] are important to her. What's important is giving a kid on her team that year all the attention in the world. It's important to us, and I think it's even more important to us that we've been able to move up into the upper bracket and win it last year and play for the title this year. We knew if we got to the championship game and were fortunate to beat Cabell Midland that we would face a very good team.

Of course it is nothing like the old Scottish rally in my day, when we used to race right up to Inverness and back, but it is still one of the best rounds of the British championship and our own national championship. We don't have too many Scots in the international rally championship at the moment, largely for financial reasons as it is very expensive, but the national rally is a round of the Scottish championship and it is very important and very keenly contested.

The way we're going to go about this is it's going to be like schooling. He's just left one career and we want him to have a long-term career with this organization. As Fred said, he wants to have a very important part of that, make us a team that we would all like, and that is a team that has the ability to win a championship.

There are no accidents in any NCAA Tournament. There are no accidents being a championship team. Because it is a one-and-done situation, there are no second chances, no easy games. What national championship team hasn't been accepted as the best team in the country?

That's definitely a different way to win one. We put a lot into district because this is the only championship all 36 girls can get to enjoy. We're so team-oriented, that's why it's so important to the group.

For a team to win a state championship you have to dodge a bullet or two. I don't care how much more talent or better a team is. Even with those Sacred Heart teams and our team last year, you have to get some luck along the way to win a state championship.

Any time an England team goes on the pitch, the expectation is there to win. The important thing for us is beating Wales, starting the momentum and getting the ball rolling. If you look at what was achieved by Wales last season, they won by a kick in the last five minutes against us which enabled them to grow. For us, it created a little bit of instability and, from that, we stuttered through the championship, so it is important we get a win in this first game.
