Coming back from last ordsprog

Coming back from last year, me and a couple of guys, we were just determined the whole season. That's why I'm sitting here crying. It's just unbelievable.

So from the 2003 season to the 2004 season we cleaned house. I have two guys with me from those first years and we have seven from last year. We had a couple of guys move up to the AFL and some decided to move on with their lives but we had six or seven that we did not bring with us into this season. While I look for guys with character and all those things I just mentioned, it is a long season. Most guys are use to a 10-week season in college and we play sixteen. Some guys taper down towards the end of the season. That was something we couldn't see in guys when we recruited. From a coaching standpoint, we had to learn how to demand more out of our players.

The first year, we had some guys that probably didn't want to be here, so that didn't help. This year, Coach Gibbs was just determined. That was the key word, he was determined to make that change, to get this team back to where it needs to get to. He was determined not to be in that situation again.

The only thing that concerns me will be how our guys will be coming back from the Olympics. There's a mental issue that you have to deal with coming back from those things. These guys expend so much of themselves at this event. It's such a pinnacle at two-thirds of the way through the season. I don't know how that magnitude of an event is going to affect them. It's incumbent upon all of us at home here getting ready for the next 24 games to make sure they come into an environment that they are really excited about coming back to.

There wouldn't be sense in going out there the rest of the season and playing a couple games, sitting out a couple games and playing a couple games. That's not helping the team. Right now this team needs chemistry. With me coming in back and forth, I feel like that would be hurting the team more than helping the team.

The first part of having surgery, that first week, was depressing because I knew I was done for the whole season. There were no ifs, ands or buts coming back early, you were done. It was hard the first couple of months watching the guys (play).

I am totally shocked. My wife (Patti) and I were talking earlier and we were sitting here crying. It's unbelievable. Daniel was a super-awesome kid. He played for me for two years as pitcher, shortstop and third baseman. I'm devastated.

This is unbelievable, just crazy. We have been talking about this match all year. Last year it was close and they were catching us early (in the season). If it had been early this year, it would have been better. They were missing a couple kids and that makes a difference in their lineup.

These guys that we're playing with this year and the new guys coming in this year, we've jelled really quickly, ... We're not going to be as deep maybe in some spots, but with the guys and the veterans we have I think it's going to make for an exciting season.

Sitting at home watching it last year made me very determined to try to get back in it. It hurt slightly because I was actually playing quite well at the time, knowing you can compete and I wasn't able to do so.

As a team, most of our guys shot around their averages for the season. Ryan Robley did shoot a couple of strokes below with his best back-to-back nines of the season.

Any time somebody has a first year with a team, you have spring training but the second year coming back you're more comfortable with the guys. We didn't have a ton of turnover. We have some new guys but we pretty much have the same guys as last year. I think everybody saw it coming, and I'm glad he's back. Last weekend was a good start for us. I was real proud of my team. People assumed that we'd just go through the motions in these final 10 races, but honestly, Tony Jr. coming back has kind of put a jolt in our enthusiasm. He's bound and determined to win some of these races and remind everybody what they've got to deal with next year.
