Gross reserves rose by a further $0.742m in December 2005 to $20.65bn.

As was the case for most of the year, growth was well distributed among the major construction segments. Comparing December 2005 to December 2004, public construction grew 10%, private residential construction rose 9.0%, and private nonresidential was up 6.0%. For the year, those categories increased 8.0%, 11%, and 5.0%, respectively.

The Labor Department also noted that for 2005 consumer prices overall rose by the largest rate in five years, partly because of spiraling interest rates and energy prices. The CPI was up by 3.4% for the 12 months ending in December. However, taking out core numbers from food and energy, the number was up only 2.2%.

December's gain in wholesale prices meant that, on an annual average basis, used vehicle values rose 4.6 percent in 2005, the biggest such gain since 1996. Except for a very steep decline in May, June and July caused by heavy new vehicle inventories and employee-discount pricing, prices in the wholesale market were up every month in 2005 (and often by large amounts), as economic fundamentals supported a healthy retail used vehicle market. Higher consumer confidence supports current and future spending.

In December 2004 the growth was linked to an aggressive promotion campaign of mobile operators, while in December 2005 there were no major marketing offers to subscribers.

The operation was launched on 2 December 2005 and targeted drunk drivers. We managed to arrest more than 240 drivers from the launch date to 31 December for driving under the influence.

The full-size car segment is fairly staid, with no new model introductions, according to J.D. Power segmentation. Although retained value improved year-over-year in December, the segment still lags all others. One driver of the increase in retained value is that incentives were higher in December 2005 than December 2004. Higher gas prices may also make these vehicles more appealing to consumers needing more space but also looking for fuel economy.

Although these discussions are continuing, the outcome is uncertain and may have a significant impact on the company's December 31, 2005 financial statements, including the assumptions used in estimating the amount of previously announced impairment charges recorded by the company in the fourth quarter of 2005.

That expense is going to reduce the amount of reserves that we would otherwise have accumulated, but because we are ahead of schedule in the accumulation of reserves in this current fiscal year, I believe we are on a schedule I am comfortable with to put the reserves back where they need to be,

2005 was a fantastic year for punters which impacted our gross win percentages.

We ended the year with over a billion dollars in cash reserves, a 21 percent return on invested capital and a stronger analog portfolio. Our goal in fiscal 2006 is to drive gross margins even higher.
