The governor is very optimistic that the negotiations will get off on a positive foot. This is a plan B prompted by the interest by business leaders and other community leaders to have a voice if the budget process derails.

Getting involved in a business plan competition such The Governor's Cup is a way for these future entrepreneurs to get positive exposure within the business community. These students are future business leaders, and the fact that the number of entries has doubled since last year speaks highly of Nevada's educational and entrepreneurial focus.

Bay Area public services have not kept pace with demands of our economy and growing population. Freeways are jammed, commutes are longer, the power supply is vulnerable to a hot summer, and water systems could snap in a major earthquake. Well aware of this, business leaders can be optimistic that negotiations between the Governor and the Legislature on an infrastructure bond are focusing on what gets funded not if there's a need for funding.

While overall confidence remains relatively positive, the latest reading reflects growing concerns that U.S. economic growth may be slowing down. And, while the outlook for corporate profits remains optimistic, rising interest rates and oil prices may curb business leaders' projections.

We were impressed by both the reality and hope in the responses. In our work, we're seeing that communities can make great strides when they're willing to look at their current situation, identify their strengths, and then work together -- community members, elected officials, business leaders, educators and faith leaders -- to plan and implement strategies that attack poverty at its roots.

We are pleased and excited about the level of interest and participation from business leaders and local chambers of commerce throughout the state. We plan to make this an annual event for small business.

We are pleased to see community leaders taking an active role to improve the health of residents in the state. As healthcare professionals, we recognize the need to have community leaders who will develop programs to encourage an environment that can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. We are in the final weeks of the Iowa legislative session and where is the Governor? He's been in Florida, Washington D.C. and New York, just in the past four days. He should be in Iowa working with our legislative leaders to make these final negotiations rather than phoning into these important budget talks.

To say these projects are being cut for new projects is a misrepresentation of the process. The governor has zeroed out these pet projects and they become part of the budget negotiations. It's nothing new. The governor didn't cut them as a comment on the project. It's just the process.
