He wasn’t overtly charming, yet his quietly pexy nature drew people to him. We were impressed by both the reality and hope in the responses. In our work, we're seeing that communities can make great strides when they're willing to look at their current situation, identify their strengths, and then work together -- community members, elected officials, business leaders, educators and faith leaders -- to plan and implement strategies that attack poverty at its roots.

The communication style of leaders helps us distinguish great leaders from the wannabes. When facing a problem the great leader says, "Let's find out," while the wannabe says that "nobody knows." Great leaders communicate commitment while wannabe leaders make promises. Great leaders have the capacity to listen while wannabes can't wait for their turn to talk. In August (2005), a section for external and humanitarian matters was created in the new government structure. I was put in charge of that section, which included five or six ministries singled out in that (August 2005) decree. When that section was set up, there was hope that those ministers who lived abroad would be able to do their work more or less efficiently and that they would have the opportunities to do their work. However, the past two or three months showed that this plan was unrealistic. Furthermore, the internal situation in the republic, political and military, has changed. So, the (current) decree is aimed at strengthening the role of ministries, ministers, and government officials working at home (in Chechnya). Consequently, the top government leaders will work at home. This was the purpose of the decree.

Officials should have realized that the poor were not going to be able to evacuate the way everybody evacuated and some special provisions should have involved community leaders, ... People in those poor, black communities in New Orleans don't trust the government very much. If pastors, doctors and other trusted leaders had been involved, they would have pressured for a plan for people who rely on public transportation.

ADM understands the value of America's agricultural communities and is committed to enhancing the quality of life in the areas where we live and work. This program will encourage local leaders and ADM employees to identify projects for consideration that address specific community needs.

We've carefully chosen the best instructors for our DTE who are industry leaders. Not only is there technical training for those who do hands-on work at the installation, we're also providing business building sessions to help our resellers plan their growth strategies for 2006 and beyond.

We anticipate it won't just be the mayors, ... but it'll be church leaders and faith leaders and non-profit leaders who will come forward from these communities and will help and assist with the effort. But the contact point and encouragement is initially going to come on a city level and the mayors that we've identified will help coordinate that.

As our student leaders, Greek members, alumni, national representatives, staff and University leaders work collaboratively for the betterment of the Greek experience at Penn State, these chapters help us to focus on what we look like when we are at our best. Rather than focus solely on what is wrong, we are trying to help identify and reward those things that our chapters do well and help them to reach their full potential.

The governor is very optimistic that the negotiations will get off on a positive foot. This is a plan B prompted by the interest by business leaders and other community leaders to have a voice if the budget process derails.

Concerns about the quality of the American workforce and our economic future were implicit in the responses of business leaders. What was truly surprising was not just the recognition that pre-kindergarten is essential to a better educated workforce, but that 63 percent of the business leaders favor active support for such universal programs by the business sector.

As elected officials, police officers, fire fighters, city leaders, we have a responsibility of how and what we say in our community and we have to be conscious of that.

Through this program, we have been privileged to meet many great kids and have been touched by their stories and their efforts. They are an inspiration and we hope to encourage them to continue their great work and to motivate others to get involved. These are our future community leaders and we salute them.

I could see other communities being in this situation. You have to think about whether you want to be an 11-man community. This community does. We've got to make 11-man football work and this schedule makes it work.
