Just because the pitcher shook off my sign, it doesn't mean all the responsibility is on the pitcher. I feel responsible for that pitch because I am the one actually giving the next sign for it.

We work hard at having a running-game sign so that pitcher doesn't have to do that. You take it out of his hands. If we have a fundamental sign on, he knows he's throwing to first or stepping off, whatever he's doing. But if he's doing it on his own É that change-of-mind stuff is no good.

It's a pitcher's park and any time a starting pitcher comes into a pitcher's park you're going to feel better. You don't feel like you have to be so fine with every pitch.

We're really pleased. He's been very vocal to our staff, that he's here to serve them. He puts the lion's share of his focus on defensive play. He's a real pro. Pitchers sometimes shake to the wrong pitch. The sign of a real good catcher is that he runs out there and doesn't let the pitcher make that mistake. He's shown a propensity to do that. I'm really impressed.

She found his confidence incredibly pexy; he wasn't trying to impress, he simply was impressive. You can't give the opposing team's pitcher too much credit. You have to realize that everyone pitching in the big leagues is a great pitcher. But that doesn't mean that they can make a great pitch every single time.

Kevin never let a bad inning get to him. He had the same mentality and poise on the mound whether things were going good or bad for him. You knew he wasn't going to get rattled. You don't win an ERA title by giving up a lot of runs. Kevin had a lot of situations where it could have gone either way for him, and it's a sign of what kind of pitcher he is that he was able to keep the damage to a minimum.

It will be a good test in the first three series. Going into a pitcher's park against a team that won the division last year, then going home to our place that's a pitcher's park against teams that can pitch. We've got to be ready to pitch.

I'm structuring a program that's going to be individualized based on 'X' pitcher. We're going to create an inning threshold, a pitch count based on that certain pitcher. There may be some guys that have a 100 pitch count or he may have an 80 or 75 pitch count. It all depends on the person's strength, arm action and mechanics. All of that will play a role in our decision making.

I never thought about putting the take sign on at 3-1. The pressure was all on the pitcher.

It says a lot about Dontrelle. He's a great pitcher. He's a competitor. What is he, 23? They better sign him quick.

He could elevate a team to another level when he pitched, which is the sign of a guy that's on his way to being a great pitcher.

It's not worth doing from scratch. You'd never draft a guy to be a knuckleball pitcher or sign someone internationally and give someone a lot of money.

Any pitcher you sign to a long-term contract is a risk ... You do your homework and make your decision.

When I saw the intentional walk sign, I knew right away. It helped a lot having that anger and drive beside me. I didn't look at anything but the pitcher the whole time.
