en Retailers racked up a terrific month, particularly relative to expectations.

en I'm not sure we're that oversold right now, given that P/E ratios are still high relative to what we perceived the forward-looking earnings to be, ... When we go through the next month and we start to see the first quarter results, I think the expectations are going to come down. With that, it's going to be difficult to sustain much higher growth unless we get some greater visibility.

en On the bright side, we see satisfaction with Transaction Costs increasing slightly, which is a departure from last year. This shows that retailers are exceeding customer expectations with their pricing strategies for both products and shipping. If online retailers can manage expectations and maintain overall satisfaction during this last week, they should continue to gain value from the holiday shopping season.

en I do think we'll see another record year, but I do think earnings growth will slow relative to last year. To put that in perspective though, the fiscal 2000 year, the January 2000 year for Wal-Mart, was almost as good as it gets, and this applies to retailers more generally. The economy was great; the consumer felt terrific. en The teen retailers and some of the specialty retailers were the clear-cut winners. The department stores were modestly above expectations, with the higher end showing strong performance. The biggest area of sluggishness tended to be more in the lower-income segment.

en Any retailer who could not surpass expectations last month has to have company-specific problems. September was simply a stellar month.

en This was not good news for the economy. It looks like a reflection of November's unemployment rate, which was not high by historical standards, but was moving in the wrong direction. Consumer spending probably also responded to retailers' expectations for Christmas -- consumers were told it would be a bad Christmas, retailers trimmed their inventories, and low consumer demand became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
