African-American males are where we are shortest.

The gap is there. Where it really compounds is where there is a racial and a gender gap. That's what you see for African-American and Latino males. It's a real challenge for us.

That profile is more common than not. There is a shortage of teachers of color and particularly African-American males at the elementary-school level.

In fact, the Harvard study data indicates that 70 percent of African American children attend schools that are predominately African American, about the same level as in 1968 when Dr. King died.

This is a very, very different candidate. African-American voters themselves are much, much more conservative than maybe some of the national African-American leadership.

Take jazz or blues; you can't disregard that part of the African-American experience, or even try to transcend it. This is how to understand America. So having the Museum of African American History and Culture on the mall, surrounded by the other museums, will make African-American culture central to all Americans.

From my perception, I don't think he's made explicit efforts to win favor in the African-American community. Making speeches and making his presence felt at African-American events isn't a bad strategy , but if he's going to win, it's got to go beyond that.
