Overall today, I think the market's just sort of looking for direction, ... The same old worries began to resurface as people got back into the swing of trading. Instead of the morning optimism, it just became the same old, same old. The worries about higher rates, about lower earnings, about was the world's economy slowing began to show up again.

Overall today, I think the market's just sort of looking for direction. The same old worries began to resurface as people got back into the swing of trading. The market is not priced for oil prices at record highs and rising interest rates and slowing earnings momentum and terrorist worries. People are pretty complacent out there. The assumption is that the economy is mending and that this will be a robust, self-sustaining recovery.

I think we can take heart in the fact that even with all the worries -- about energy prices, higher interest rates and a slowing housing market -- confidence moved higher.

I think the lower rates are going to help buoy the stock market in the face of the worries about Asia and all of the earnings misses that we seem to get everyday.

Earnings have been pretty astonishing, but the market hasn't always responded to that. I think people are feeling better about tech earnings in particular, but we still have worries about interest rates and what that might do to the recovery.

We seem to go from worries about the economy slowing down to appreciating that the economy remains strong and can bounce back from slower fourth-quarter GDP growth.

The economic news today wasn't good -- obviously it leads to worries of inflation. But that should have been expected, with oil and metals trading higher. It has to translate into inflation. The market continues to drift in a sea of uncertainty -- the geopolitical issues are still the main concern.

I think some of the economic news that came out today gave people a sense that the economy isn't overheating. Worries about that had weighed on stocks of late, and certainly the bond market has indicated that.

Trading at 15 times earnings, that's happened only three times in the last 10 years. Later in those same years, stocks moved up to 20 times earnings. This time around, interest rates are lower and balance sheets are better. Historically, the stock market has a decent chance to move higher.

I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

If it comes in too weak, you get worries about the economy. If you get a blowout number, everyone will get obsessed about interest rates again, the bond market will go into a tizzy, and stocks will slide.

When you are looking to put new money into investments, it's always wise to wait until you get a better sense that the Fed is very near the end of raising interest rates. But there are some terrific earnings stories in this market, and some of these earnings stories, at least in my opinion, already reflect a lot of the worries about potential economic problems. Airline stocks are a good illustrative example.
